The Mythological Titan Gaea
By: Wendy Romero, Elsa Burnside, and Violet Duffy
So, how was Gaea created?
In the beginning of the creation there was only chaos. Gaea came out of the chaos, darkness, loneliness, and silence. She was emerged along with the sun, wind, and the sky. She appeared with the earth and brought rich blessings to the upper and the underworld. Love was born and followed light and day.
What was one of Gaea's stories?
Gaea give born to Ouranos, the sky god, who became her husband. Together they had a passionate relationship, but because of the strength of Ourano's embrace, their children could not escape the earth womb, until the youngest son, Kronos, freed them by emaculating his father. From Ouranous' blood, Gaea also gave birth to the Furies, goddesses who sought revenge on murderers. Kronos turned out to be just like his father, and swallowed his own children. Gaea advised Rhea, Kronos' wife, to give Kronos a stone wrapped in linen instead of their youngest born, Zeus and that is what Rhea did. Because Kronos did not notice that he swallowed a rock, Zeus overthrew Kronos, and freed his brothers and sisters from his stomach. Gaea again helped Zeus, warning him that a child of his born from his lover Metis would take over. Zeus then swalloed Metis, and Athena sprang from his head. Zeus had been saved, by Gaea, from a fate similar to Kronos' and Ouranos', holding his place as the supreme god.
Some of Her Other Unions
Gaea also had unions or affairs with Pontos (the sea) with whom she had the sea gods, and Tatarus (the hell-pit) with whom she had the giants and some other monsters. She disliked that Zeus had throne her sons into Tatarus so she gave birth to the gigantes or the giants and the monster typhoes in an attempt to dethrone him, both came close but niether suceeded. Not much is mentioned in myths about her after the attempt to dethrone Zeus, but she was still celebrated by mortals after that because it is said that Promtheis took the clay to make humans from her womb.
What She Looked Like
She is depicted in pottery as a young maiden in the earth from the waist down. Although this is true in some mosaics she was depicted as the spirit of the earth, a young maiden clad in green.
